Areas Covered: Guilford County, NC
Summary: The goal of the current proposal is to conduct a mixed-method, longitudinal evaluation of a community-based and gender-specific mentoring program for at-risk youth ages 11-18 across varying levels of risk using a multi-dimensional mentoring model that targets individual, school, and family-level domains. Two community-based, gender-specific mentoring programs called BOTSO for boys and Ladies LOTSO for girls who provide intensive programming of mentoring, structured tutoring, character-building, arts, culture, and positive discipline will be evaluated. The Center for Behavioral Health and Wellness at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has partnered with Win-Win Resolutions, Inc to examine whether the addition of the tutoring component within a mentoring model further increases the impact of the mentoring program, or whether these impacts differ for juveniles of varying levels of risk for offending/reoffending. Outcomes tracked will include delinquency, risk of offending, academic performance, attendance and behavior, self-esteem, and family cohesion. The proposed evaluation will inform the field as to whether integrating in a structured tutoring component leads to additional increases in positive outcomes for at-risk juveniles.
