Training Outline

The time frame is based on those attending the training living close to the training site or arriving the day before. Detailed instructions for some of these activities are at the end of this outline.

DAY ONE

8:15
Early Arrivals

Alphabet Soup

Goals:

There should be pencils/pens on the tables and copies of Alphabet Soup for individuals to answer. Alphabet Soup is a listing of acronyms or jargon used by victim service and mental health professionals. Each team member is asked to write what the acronym or jargon means. Since these terms vary from location to location, ask the host site to develop a list and provide the answers.

8:30
Introduction/welcome - 15 minutes
Funding recognition
Goals of training
Core concepts (overhead)
Housekeeping business

8:45
Building Bridges, Team Building Exercise - 45 minutes (15 minutes for team to fill in newsprint & 3 minutes per team to report)

Goals:

The team leader will be the person whose first name begins with the letter closest to the beginning of the alphabet. Each team will form its own construction company and put on newsprint the following:

*name of the company
*logo or motto of the company
*total number of years of experience at that table
*city/state they represent
*names of the team members
*drawing of the type of bridge needed for their community as well as a description of the chasm they must traverse

The team leader will hang it on the wall and explain the information on the newsprint to the rest of the groups.

9:30
Break - 5 minutes

9:35
Video segment - 12 minutes

Goal:

End the break with opening segment from Understanding Psychological Trauma, a video on trauma of victimization. (12 min. stop at Dissociation) Introduce video to audience. Tell them they will see the entire video during the two day training. It will address universal themes as identified by survivors of trauma.

9:47
Mixer- 8 minutes

Goal:

The team leader will be the person who has fewest number of years in current position.

Have team leader get a participant's manual for each member of her/his team and hand them out. The manuals will have name of someone else on inside. Each person must find the manual with her/his name on it. Before receiving the manual from the other person, the individual must introduce self and say what s/he thinks is the biggest obstacle to bridge building in her/his community.

9:55
Agent of Change - 1 hour (15 minutes for exercise; 45 minutes for worksheets)

Goal:

Pair participants to do exercise. Use overhead to parallel resistance to change with what happened during exercise. Participants will have "fill in the blank" page to follow along with overhead. Detailed instructions are at the end of the training outline.

10:55
Break - 5 minutes

11:00
Video segment - 8 minutes

End the break with another segment from Understanding Psychological Trauma. Show first two universal themes - dissociation and imprint of traumatic memories (5 min). Have newsprint with Universal Themes for Trauma Survivors written at the top. After showing video segments ask group to list the universal themes that were listed in the video and any key words or phrases they feel are important.

11:08
Agency & community strengths and weaknesses (1½ hours)

Goals:

The team leader will be person at table who was the last person back after the break.

Each team member will assess her/his agency by filling in blocks on strengths and weaknesses (5 min). The team leader will facilitate discussion and record notes on strengths and weaknesses (10 min). On back of page, each participant will list organizational or systemic resistance to and opportunities for change (5 min). They will also identify who "owns" the resistance. The team will then brainstorm ways to move the resistance to opportunity (10 min). Team leaders will report to entire group (30 min). (Two people who are not currently serving as team leaders will be asked to volunteer to write down comments on flip charts.) Time should be allowed for comments, suggestions or feedback from entire group (10 min). The trainer can add additional ideas that were generated by the original panel to the obstacles/resistance list (see page 36). After feedback from the entire group, each team will outline on newsprint an action plan for building its bridge by setting goals, identifying tasks and establishing deadlines (15 min). Action plans should be posted so all can see. Time should be allowed for individuals to walk around and look at each team's plan (5 min). Each team should then discuss if they would like to make any revisions to its action plan based on what others proposed (5 min).

12:33
Lunch - 1 hour (if participants have to leave the building to get lunch, additional time should be added.)

1:33
Video segment - 13 minutes

Resume the video and play the next two themes, Biphasic response and Disruption of self (5 min). Add themes and related comments to Universal Themes list.

1:46
Review contents of training manual - 30 minutes

Goal:

The Trainer will take 15 minutes to give brief overview of manual resource pieces. The remaining 15 minutes will be for individuals to look through the book. They can use Post-it flags to mark sections.

The material in the participant's manual is a collection of articles and information from victim services and mental health providers. Since these fields do not always share the same perspectives, readers may not agree with everything included in the manual. Teams should be encouraged to identify topics for which there are differing perspectives that could be obstacles to building bridges. The articles selected for this manual are designed to give participants a basic understanding of a variety of issues while at the same time providing discussion starters. Participants should be encouraged to select materials from the bibliography to gain a deeper understanding of specific topics.

2:16
Serving specific victims - fill in the blanks exercise (75 min)

Goals:

Near the end of this section there are two sets of charts. One set has the suggestion column blank. Give each team multiple copies of one of these charts (one team gets burglary; another team receives elderly). The chart will have the suggestion column blank. Each individual will be asked to fill in the blanks (15 min). Then the team can compare answers (15 min). The team leaders will put the team's responses on newsprint. Depending on the size of the group or the speed at which they have been working, it may be necessary to hand out two different charts to each table. If more than one chart is given to a table, the team should work as a whole to fill in each chart and not divide into two smaller groups to accomplish the task.

2:46
Break - 5 minutes

2:51
Resume serving victims exercise

Individuals will receive a clean copy of all of the charts that have the empty suggestion column. Leaders will hang their team's response on the wall and go over it with the entire group (30 min). Everyone will be given time to walk around the room and look at the responses (10 min).

3:31
Break - 5 minutes

3:36
Video segment - 10 minutes

Finish the first video. Add Trust & Safety and Validation to Universal Themes list. Point out that trust and safety must be present before a therapeutic relationship can be formed.

3:46
Prepare case study - 20 minutes

Goals:

The trainer will announce that the team leader is person who stands up first. Each team is asked to compose a one-two paragraph case study which contains at least one victim or secondary victim of trauma who is seeking/in need of counseling as a result of the trauma. There should be some background information about the individual(s). The team leader will appoint a member of the team who has legible handwriting to record the information. The trainer will collect the case studies at the end of the exercise.

4:06
Wrap up - 10 minutes

Goals:

The team leader is person with most letters in last name.

The team leader hands out index cards to team members. Team members individually or as a group are to put on cards any questions they have. These will be used for discussion on day two. Anyone interested in serving on a panel on day two is asked to put her/his name, team construction company name, room number and area of expertise on an index card. Team leaders will collect cards and return to trainer.

__________________________________________

The trainer will review questions submitted by participants. If there are enough volunteers for a panel, the questions can be submitted to the panel. Ideally, the panel should have members of several teams as well as different types of agencies/expertise. The trainer will select and contact those individuals s/he wishes to have on the panel. If there are not enough volunteers for the panel, the questions can be used as the basis of a group discussion.

DAY TWO

8:30
Review of topics covered previous day-30 minutes

Review all material covered on the previous day but spend the most time on Universal The mes and Stages of Change. Ask participants to recall from memory the Universal Themes covered on the video the day before. Have a volunteer write them down on newsprint; then compare with the list from yesterday. Review Stages of Change. Have a second volunteer record those on newsprint.

9:00
Video segment - 18 minutes

Show Telling the Story and Second Injury on part II of Understanding Psychological Trauma. Add these themes and any key words to the list started on day 1

9:18
Victim-centered responses - 70 minutes

Goals:

The team leader will be selected by the team. All members of the team will raise one hand in the air with index finger pointing. At the count of three each member of the team will point to the individual s/he wants to be team leader. Each team will be given a total of three scenarios of varying difficulty/complications. The scenarios will be a mixture of the ones printed in the training guide and the scenarios composed by the teams at the end of day 1. The teams will focus on victim-centered options and if needed the development and implementation of victim-centered policies and procedures (30 min).

This practice session allows team members to examine typical scenarios they might face and develop guidelines for victim-centered collaboration before encountering a situation in which members of the team have vested interests.

9:48
Break - 5 minutes

9:53
Resume case studies

The team leaders will select a response to one case to report to the entire group (30 min). Depending on the number of teams at the training, more than one team may recount the same scenario. The group reports may provide different solutions to the same case. The trainer can use these differences to facilitate a large group discussion on multiple solutions (10 min).

10:33
Break - 5 minutes

10:38
Panel discussion or general question & answer period - 1 hour

Goals:

The trainer will introduce panel members and moderate panel discussion using the questions submitted the day before. If there were not enough people willing to serve as panel members, trainer will conduct a question and answer session. The trainer does not have to supply the answers to all of the questions, but can ask for answers from the group.

11:38
Video segment - 16 minutes

Show final segment of video and add last theme to list. Allow participants to make any comments about completed list of themes.

11:54
Lunch

12:54
Self care - 45 minutes

Goals:

The team leader will be the individual sitting with back to trainer. Each team leader will get enough handouts for the team. Everyone should fill in the chart on page 1 and calculate the stress level. Each team will offer suggestions to help reduce stress in each of the categories. Team members can use the second page of this handout to record ideas that might help to reduce stress. Ask for two volunteers who are not currently team leaders and have legible printing to record on the flip charts the ideas generated by the various teams. The trainer can augment the list with materials developed by NOVA that accompany this exercise.

1:39
Evaluations - 5 minutes

Handout the evaluations. There should be a box placed near the exit to the training room so participants can turn in their evaluations as they leave the room for a break.

1:44
Break - 5 minutes

1:49
Return to action plan - 30 minutes

Goals:

The team leader will be selected by the team. The individual selected will serve as the leader of the team when they return to their community. Each team should review its plan and make adjustments or changes. The team leader will assign tasks (with deadlines) to individuals or sub-groups and set a time for the next meeting. Since most team members will return to mountains of work, it is important for the teams to use this time to begin the bridge building process. Teams that start the process before they return home have a greater chance of building their bridge. Team leaders can use this time to select articles from the participant's manual for members to be prepared to discuss at the next team meeting.

2:19
Recognition & Thanks - 10 minutes

Goals:

The trainer will ask those selected to be the permanent team leaders to stand up and be recognized. The trainer will hand out tokens of thanks to those who served as team leaders more than twice during the training. There could be different "prizes" for those who served three times, four times, etc.
