MORNING SESSION

Practitioner Session #2: New Technology Issues and Challenges
Amanda Sozer, Moderator
Biography

DR. SOZER: This next session will prove, I hope, to be interesting and informative to everyone. We're going to talk about new technology issues and challenges. Sozer: Slide 1

The focus of this session is to bridge the gap between forensic research and applied science. Sozer: Slide 2

The goal of this session is to stimulate audience participation and discussion between researchers and end users. Sozer: Slide 3

Our panel members were asked about what new technology issues and challenges they felt were important in their area. Each of the panel members is going to talk about a specific area in forensic science. Sozer: Slide 4

Lucy Davis Houck is going to start by talking to us about the challenges involved in forensic casework. Lucy is the technical leader for NFSTC (National Forensic Science Technology Center) and State, local, and private laboratories, so she really has some experience in that area. Sozer: Slide 5

Dave Coffman is the CODIS administrator for the State of Florida and a real pioneer in automation and high-throughput technology. He will give us his thoughts on high-throughput testing and analysis.

Steve Niezgoda is with Niezgoda Consulting. Many people were saddened by the fall of Enron, but I think the forensic community was very pleased because Steve came back to the forensic community and has been instrumental in working on the kinship and data analysis panel for NIJ and for the World Trade Center. He is coming out with a lessons-learned document and also the convicted offender outsourcing program. He's going to talk about issues related to information technology.

Last but not least is Susan Hart Johns. She is the bureau chief for the Illinois State Police and the president of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD), both of which are very impressive titles to have. She is going to talk about management issues and how management is impacted by new technologies.
