Creating a School Safety Plan

Critical Incident Planning

The NIJ-sponsored Web site, JUSTNET Exit Notice, sponsors an online internet resource directory on school safety. The directory provides information on preparation and response to a critical incident in a school and how to treat victims in the aftermath.

School Safety Risk Assessment Tool

Software is being developed that will help school administrators and staff assess a school’s security and vulnerability to attack. The software will train school staff on security, risk assessment and security technologies and help staff assess their school's safety.

School Safety Plan Generator

An interactive CD-ROM is being developed to help school staff produce a school safety plan that includes law enforcement response information to assist first responders.

To request a CD-ROM, call the NIJ-sponsored Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center (RULETC) at (866) 787-2553.

Awarding Funds to Create Individual School Safety Plans

NIJ will make $1,000 – $5,000 awards to approximately 200 schools across the country through a competition administered by the Rural Law EnforcementTechnology Center. To participate, schools must write a one-page concept paper on how they would spend $1,000 on technology to make their school safer. The contest will also require a one-page report on the acquired technology and how it has improved safety at the school. The reports will be posted on the JUSTNET School Safety page Exit Notice as a resource for schools looking for low-cost, effective ways to keep their schools safe.
