by National Institute of JusticeJune 2009

How can we prevent reoffending and reduce costs? Research points to a number of solutions. At the Tuesday plenary of the 2009 NIJ Conference:

  • Judge Steven Alm from Hawaii described his successes with hard-core drug offenders. “Swift and sure” is his motto.
  • West Virginia Cabinet Secretary James W. Spears discussed the issues from his state's perspective.
  • Adam Gelb, Director of the Pew Charitable Trust's Public Safety Performance Project, lent a national overview.
  • Pamela Lattimore, Ph.D., described research that has found success with reentry planning that happens while a person is still in prison and continues when the person is released into the community.

You also will hear introductions by Kristina Rose, Acting Director of the National Institute of Justice, and Laurie Robinson, Acting Assistant Attorney General, and a question and answer session.
