1996-1997 Update: HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB in Correctional Facilities

July 1999
1996-1997 Update: HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB in Correctional Facilities combines BJS, NIJ, and CDC survey statistics on the extent of these diseases and reports on the policies and practices implemented to prevent and control them in correctional settings. Although policy response has improved, additional improvements are needed in comprehensive prevention programs, discharge planning, community linkages, and continuity of treatment. Also, increased collaboration is needed among correctional departments, public health agencies, and community-based organizations. Topics discussed in this NIJ Issues and Practices report include transmission, risk factors, and education; counseling and testing; housing and correctional management; screening; and legal issues.
