Stalking in America: Findings From the National Violence Against Women Survey
April 1998Stalking in America: Findings From the National Violence Against Women Survey presents data from the first-ever national study on stalking. The data show stalking to be much more prevalent than previously thought. Using a definition of stalking that requires victims to feel a high level of fear, the NVAW Survey found that 8 percent of women and 2 percent of men in the United States have been stalked at some time in their life. Based on U.S. Census estimates of the number of women and men in the country, one out of every 12 U.S. women (8.2 million) has been stalked at some time in her life, and one out of every 45 U.S. men (2 million) has been stalked at some time in his life.
