This report presents recommendations for the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids in healthy adults as determined by a subcommittee of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL).
Abstract
The report has three parts: recommendations for the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA); a recognition that there may be a healthy upper limit in the intake of linoleic acid (LA); and references and supplementary notes. Recommendations for the intake of PUFA pertain to an adequate LA intake, a healthy intake of a-linolenic acid (ALA), and a minimum intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) combined. The report cites the studies upon which each of the recommendations is based. This report contains recommended changes by the ISSFAL Board prior to its approval of the report at its June 2004 meeting.
