Trainings

Bullet NeighborWorks America (NW)

The partnership between CCDO and NeighborWorks continues to provide Weed and Seed sites with access to training on key topics of interest. This year, sites will have the opportunity to participate in three levels of training: Place-based training (PBT), the Community Leadership Institute (CLI), and the Community Sustainability Forum.

PLACE-BASED TRAINING

NW will continue to bring top-notch non-cost training to sites. Up to six place-based trainings will be scheduled, based on the review of the required survey. To ensure maximum participation by residents, the trainings can be delivered during the week or weekend.

Sites interested in this training must complete the Place-Based Training Request and Assessment Form and submit the form to Amy Akparewa at Amy.Akparewa@usdoj.gov by February 12, 2008. The application for training will be reviewed by CCDO and if approved forwarded to NW to begin make arrangements to accommodate the training topic and date. Please note the specific requirements sites must adhere to secure this training.

  • Identify and confirm a minimum of 20 participants. CCDO seeks to ensure as many people from the community benefit from the training as possible. The training offered by NeighborWorks may include anyone from the community including residents and other organizations and agencies. If you are unsure whether you can generate sufficient numbers for a PBT, it may also be advantageous to partner with other Weed and Seed sites near you to offer a combined training.
  • Secure a location for the training. While NW will provide the material and trainer, the intent in offering place-based training is to provide an accessible location. Sites should identify a location (preferably in the community) that can accommodate the training that includes sufficient parking for participants
  • Coordinate registration. The site must agree to be responsible for coordinating the registration process. NW will provide a form to use as well as flyer to market the training in the community. Technical questions about the training should still be forwarded to NW.

Training topics available by NW include:

  • Increasing Residents Involved In Your Organization*
  • Developing Your Leadership Potential
  • Getting Things Done In Neighborhood through Strategic Collaborations
  • Community Sustainability Strategies**
  • Mobilizing Youth for Community Building

* Session will also be offered at the Strategy Development conference in March 2008
** This session contains segments of the Community Sustainability Forum

All participants completing the program will receive a certificate from NeighborWorks.

COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY FORUM
May 5-8, 2008
Cincinnati, Ohio

NeighborWorks will offer the second Community Sustainability Forum at its Training Institute in Cincinnati on May 5-8, 2008, for 15 Weed and Seed sites consisting of a team of three (3) representatives. The goal of the Community Sustainability Forum is to provide sites the opportunity to develop a plan of action to sustain the work in the community by examining their position within the dimensions of sustainability: Structural, Community Impact and Resource Development. Weed and Seed sites in years two and beyond of strategy implementation may apply to attend this forum. CCDO will work with NW to review all applications and make the final determination of sites to attend the training. Housing and air transportation will be covered by NW; sites will have to cover per diem and ground transportation cost. Applications will be available via the CCDO website by mid-January 2008.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (CLI)
June 19-22, 2008
New Orleans, Louisiana

CCDO is committed to providing resident leaders with training opportunities to increase their capacity to guide the development and implementation of the Weed and Seed strategy. This year, NW will offer a unique training opportunity for Weed and Seed sites in the Gulf Region. Six teams representing of four individuals will be selected to participate in the 2008 Community Leadership Institute.

Each team will identify in advance a key challenge to be addressed relative to the implementation of the Weed and Seed strategy. Based on the challenge, team members will take classes over the weekend and participate in facilitated sessions to develop an action plan to address their respective challenges when they return. Sites will then be monitored by NW to ensure the action plan has been deployed.
