For white children under age 5, the rate began at 2.4 in 1976 and fluctuates with a low of 2.3 as it increases to 2.5 in 1978. Then the rate dropped to 2.3 in 1979, before rising to 2.5 in 1982. It then decreased to 2.2 in 1983, before increasing to a high of 2.7 in 1991. The rate then dropped to 2.4 in 1992, before rising to 2.7 in 1996. Then it decreased, reaching 2.2 in 1999, before increasing, reaching 2.4 in 2001. Then the rate decreased, reaching 2.2 in 2005.

For black children under age 5, the rate began at 10.2 in 1976 and increased to 10.7 in 1978. After 1978, the rate dropped to a low of 8.1 in 1984, where it remained constant until 1985. It then increased, reaching 11.5 in 1986, before decreasing, reaching a low of 6.4 in 2004. Then the rate climbed to 6.6 in 2005.

For children of other races under age 5, the rate began at 1.6 in 1976 and dropped to 0.8 in 1977. Then the rate increased, reaching 3.2 in 1982, before falling to a low of 0.7 in 2005.
