The number of white prisoners on death row began at 243 in 1968 and climbed to 306 in 1971. Then the number decreased to 64 in 1973, before increasing to 1,989 in 2000. After 2000, it fell to 1,804 in 2007.

The number of black prisoners on death row began at 271 in 1968 and increased to 335 in 1970. Then the number decreased to 68 in 1973, before increasing to a high of 1,551 in 2002. Then it decreased to 1,345 in 2007.

The number of prisoners of other races on death row began at 3 in 1968 and decreased to 2 in 1969. After 1969, the number increased to 4 in 1971, before decreasing to 1 in 1972. After 1972, it increased to 8 in 1975, before decreasing to 0 in 1976. Then the number rose to 78 in 2003, before decreasing to 71 in 2007.
