For NCVS reported, the number of serious violent crime began at 1,860,400 in 1973 and increased, reaching 2,231,800 in 1982. After 1982, the number decreased to 1,030,200 in 2004, before increasing to 972,000 in 2007.

For UCR reported, the number of serious violent crimes began at 715,300 in 1973 and increased, reaching 1,656,100 in 1992. The number then decreased, reaching a low of 1,162,100 in 2004. After 2004, the number increased, reaching 1,203,400 in 2007.

For UCR arrests, the number of serious violent crimes began at 392,700 in 1973 and increased, reaching 796,200 in 1995. After 1995, the number decreased, reaching a low of 590,300 in 2004, before increasing to 597,400 in 2007.
