males. However, the number of adult females in jail increased faster than
males.

Between 1990 and 2006, the number of white and Hispanic jail inmates increased
at the same average annual rate. The number black inmates increased at
a slower pace.

Blacks were almost three times more likely than Hispanics
and five times more likely than whites to be in jail.
