1. Find a journal article by D. Alex Heckert on batterer programs.
Answer: This information can be found in the NCJRS Database.
Search the author field for the author's last name and enter
"batterer" into the subject field. Among the results is "Effect
of Perceptions of Sanctions on Batterer Program Outcomes" from the Journal
of Research in Crime and Delinquency.
2. Find an article written in 2000 on restorative justice.
Answer: Enter "1/2000-12/2000" into the date field of
the NCJRS Database and "restorative justice" (including the quotes)
into the subject field. One such article is "Victims' Needs, Restorative
Justice and the Juvenile Court: An Exploratory Study of U.S. Judges" which
appeared in the Spring 2000 edition of the Journal
for Juvenile Justice and Detention Services.
3. Find a document containing the words
prisoner(s) and rehabilitation in the title, but not drugs.
Answer: Enter "(prisoner* and rehabilitation) NOT drugs"
into the title field. One qualifying article is "Effectiveness of
Rehabilitation With Persistently Violent Male
Prisoners" from the International Journal of Offender Therapy and
Comparative Criminology.

2. Find the text of Senate Report 106-352 from the 106th
Congress.
Answer: From the Thomas
homepage, follow the link on the right-hand side to "Committee
Reports." At the top of the resulting search page, select the 106th
Congress and check the box next to "Senate Reports" in the first
search section. Enter 106-352 into the "Report Number" field, the
second search option.
3. According to the 2000 Census,
what is the number of Texans who indicated their ethnicity as Asian?

Answer: ERIC is an excellent source of education related material. The "Advanced Search" allows the user to search for several keywords at a time. Entering "lead," "exposure," "children," and "learning" will come up with several relevant results including Hebert Needleman's "The Poisoning of America's Children: Lead Exposure, Children's Brains, and the Ability To Learn."
