Public Safety Officers' Benefits Program: Related Resources

Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), Inc. provides services and assistance for families and coworkers of fallen law enforcement officers during the annual National Police Week program. COPS also provides regional training sessions and several special seminars and extended programs for spouses, siblings, and children of slain officers.

The Correctional Peace Officers (CPO) Foundation was created for two principal reasons: (1) to sustain, support, and assist the survivors of correctional officers killed in the line of duty and (2) to promote and protect a positive image of the correctional officer to the general public and within the profession itself. The CPO Foundation created a death benefit fund to assist the dependents of correctional peace officers killed in the line of duty. Additionally, the CPO Foundation assists single-parent families during crisis periods of injury and death.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation provides peer counseling, training, and technical assistance for the families and coworkers of firefighters who were killed in the line of duty. Some of its specific activities include developing and disseminating publications and reference materials for survivors and senior fire department managers and creating a public awareness strategy to promote the fire service and its critical role in public safety.

The Badge of Honor Memorial Foundation fulfills three major functions for the families and departments of peace officers killed in the line of duty: (1) assists the surviving family in obtaining all of the federal and state statutory benefits that may be available to them; (2) provides each family coping with their loss with a memorial statue as a lasting symbol of recognition for the life of service the officer courageously gave; and (3) helps educate police organizations in casualty assistance planning.
