AWARD AMOUNT:

$447,146*

PURPOSE: The Shelby County Drug Court will use grant funds to implement a juvenile drug court, which will target nonviolent, substance-abusing juvenile offenders. The goals of the program are to enhance public safety by reducing substance abuse, to improve the educational performance of participants, and to strengthen families. The program will serve 90 juveniles and 90 to 150 family members over a 3-year period. Clients will be expected to participate in the program for a minimum of 12 months. The drug court will provide intensive judicial supervision, treatment, mandatory drug testing, graduated sanctions, aftercare, and other rehabilitative services. Additionally, a management information system will be utilized to monitor client progress and to conduct process and outcome evaluations. The program will provide collateral services such as tutoring, transportation, mental and primary health care, and educational services. The Shelby County Drug Court will coordinate its efforts with the following agencies: the Career Development Center, Shelby County Day Program, Orion Behavioral Healthcare, Clastran, Kid One Transport, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
