PURPOSE: The Brighton District Court will use grant funds to enhance 4 drug courts in
Suffolk County, which target nonviolent, substance-abusing adult offenders. The goals of the
program are: (1) to increase participants' retention rates by developing an efficient screening and
assessment protocol; (2) to facilitate and improve client placements made by the 4 drug courts in
Suffolk County; and (3) to implement additional services that address issues faced by substance
abusers. The program will serve 470 clients over a 2-year period. Clients are expected to
participate in the program for a minimum of 12 to 18 months. The drug court will provide
intensive judicial supervision, treatment, mandatory drug testing, graduated sanctions, aftercare,
and other rehabilitative services. Additionally, a management information system will be
utilized to monitor client progress and to conduct process and outcome evaluations.
