FY 2002 DRUG COURT GRANT PROGRAM

Juvenile Enhancement Grant Award

Maine

AWARD RECIPIENT:

Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services
Augusta, ME

AWARD AMOUNT:

$177,911*

PURPOSE: The Maine Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services will use grant funds to provide comprehensive, state-of- the-art training on juvenile drug court operations and treatment issues for all juvenile drug courts in the state's multi-site drug court system. Sixteen one-day training programs will be provided for practitioners and key partnering organizations from all 6 of Maine's juvenile drug courts. An additional workshop will be provided for new juvenile drug court judges. On average, 45 participants will take part in each workshop. The goals and objectives of the statewide training program are: (1) to ensure that the Maine Juvenile Drug Treatment Court's (MJDTC) judges employ the most current "best practices" with regard to the operation of their juvenile drug treatment courts and understand the fundamentals of addiction and treatment; (2) to ensure that drug court partners foster better collaboration and develop better understanding of each other's mission and operations; (3) to train new judges to provide back-up for existing judges; and (4) to facilitate and monitor the implementation of Maine's new standard of care for juvenile substance abuse treatment throughout the MJDTC system. Each workshop will be evaluated according to its effectiveness as an individual training and its overall impact on the effectiveness of the juvenile drug court program. The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, Office of Substance Abuse will coordinate this statewide effort with the following agencies or organizations: the Maine District Court of the Maine Judicial Branch; the Department of Corrections, Juvenile Services Division; Day One (treatment provider); AdCare Educational Institute, Inc.; and the University of Southern Maine, Center for Social and Behavioral Research.
