Tribal Enhancement Grant Award: FY 2002

South Dakota

AWARD RECIPIENT:

Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribal Court
Agency Village, SD

AWARD AMOUNT:

$116,121*

PURPOSE: The Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribal Court will use grant funds to enhance an adult tribal drug court in a rural jurisdiction. The court will serve nonviolent, substance-abusing offenders. The program will last approximately 9 months, and it will operate based on a post- adjudication and deferred prosecution model. The enhancement grant will provide funding to continue program operations, improve program resources, provide additional services to drug court clients, and for attendance at mandatory drug court training sessions. The goals of the enhancement are to expand program capacity, increase screening and supervision, and add an aftercare component. The court has established relationships with various local substance abuse treatment providers, the judge, district attorney's office, defense bar, public defender, tribal police department, and the Enemy Swim District Weed and Seed project. The court will utilize a management information system to maintain a database to manage the client cases and tribal drug court operations.
