Commonly Used Measures of Residential Substance Abuse Treatment
Process Measures
- Number of days of residential treatment and/or aftercare provided
- Number and type of program services provided (medical care, drug counseling, counseling for emotional/behavioral problems, and aftercare)
- Degree of program participation (length or number of drug counseling or individual counseling sessions)
- Number entering an RSAT program
- Number of dropouts (for the RSAT program and/or its aftercare component)
- Number of successful program completers (for the RSAT program and/or its aftercare component)
- Average length of stay for program completers (for the RSAT program and/or its aftercare component)
- Number terminated (for the RSAT program and/or its aftercare component)
- Number and type of program violations (number of infractions and number of positive drug tests)
- Average cost per day (for the RSAT program and/or its aftercare component)
Outcome Measures
- Changes in substance abuse problems
- Changes in social and psychological functioning
- Rearrest rates (during and post-program)
- Post-release drug use
- Time to rearrest
- New drug related arrests
- Returns to prison
- Employment status
- Participation in school/vocational training
- Reliance on public assistance
