Putting the Evaluation Findings to Work

  • Ensure the program is implemented properly so the needs of offenders are effectively and efficiently addressed.
  • Use valid and reliable substance abuse screening and assessment instruments to reduce inappropriate referrals.
  • Address offenders' drug use as well as medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems during treatment.
  • Begin treatment for offenders immediately upon entry into the program.
  • Continually update the treatment and service plans for offenders while ensuring they are appropriate to the offenders' age, gender, ethnicity, and culture.
  • Ensure treatment staff are properly trained and receive "booster" trainings to provide on-going effective treatment services.
  • Familiarize correctional officers with the treatment-oriented initiatives that will be part of the RSAT program.
  • Use techniques such as sanctions and family and employment enticements to increase both initial and continued program participation.
  • Develop comprehensive and long-term aftercare programs to help RSAT graduates maintain abstinence from drug use.
