What are Information Sharing/Integration Initiatives?
Though data sharing is not new to the justice field, recent technological advancements in information sharing and the events of September 11, 2001 have resulted in new information sharing/integration efforts. Today, justice information sharing/integration systems are designed to facilitate a more efficient and effective electronic sharing of justice information among distinct justice agencies/departments through the use of innovative technologies. For example, XML (eXtensible Markup Language) allows for more efficient and effective routing and translation of information among disparate information systems or databases to meet the goals of justice-based information sharing/integration initiatives. While XML is not the only language or method available to facilitate data sharing, it is one of the most popular within the justice community. Global Justice eXtensible Markup Language Data Model (Global JXDM) is an XML project supported by the Office of Justice Programs (OJP). Consequently, various justice-affiliated organizations are taking steps to ensure their existing software is compliant with XML. The new technologies being developed will allow justice agencies to share information while assuring adequate security of data that are accessed.
Information sharing initiatives are intended to aid in traditional criminal justice system processing and to assist intelligence and law enforcement agencies to more effectively fight terrorism. When properly implemented, information sharing/integration systems have the potential to provide a more productive, accurate, effective, efficient, and secure means for the sharing/integration of justice data.
