Putting the Evaluation Findings To Work

  • Develop a tracking system to determine which defendants are potentially eligible for the mental health court.
  • Select participants in need of mental health treatment through careful assessment and diagnosis.
  • Develop collaboration among mental health, community, and criminal justice agencies and systems.
  • Incorporate standardized assessment instruments to monitor participant progress.
  • Promote the timely sharing of information between justice and mental health agencies.
  • Ensure defendants diagnosed with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse problems receive adequate substance abuse treatment.
  • Learn privacy laws that might hinder data collection and find ways to obtain data.
  • Conduct fidelity checks during the program to determine the delivery, quality and intermediate results of services.
  • Track defendants after their case is closed in the mental health court to determine whether any long-term benefits are gained from mental health court participation.
