What Is Community Justice?
Community justice promotes offender supervision, accountability, and treatment within a community context and seeks to foster partnerships between the criminal justice system and the community. The goals of community justice initiatives often include: enhancing community safety, victim restitution, and successful reintegration of the offender into the community. A wide variety of initiatives, programs, and strategies fall under the heading of community justice, including:
- Community policing and police-community corrections partnerships;
- Problem-solving or specialized courts, such as mental health courts and courts;
- Community prosecution;
- Reentry programs;
- Victim services, including restorative justice programs;
- Community planning/mobilization initiatives.
