Putting the Evaluation Findings to Work
Prepare
- Identify the goals of the PDMP
- Develop system use and protocols to ensure the quality of the data submitted to the PDMP
- Develop system use and data protocols for the PDMP to protect confidentiality
- Develop ongoing training on the use of the PDMP system for prescribers, dispensers, and investigators
- Advertise the PDMP to increase awareness and use of the system
- Develop systems to identify suspected cases of abuse and diversion or inappropriate prescribing and dispensing.
Implement
- Improve reliability and timeliness of data by implementing an ongoing training effort related to these issues
- Promote the use of the system by prescribers, dispensers, and investigators
- Reduce the time between requesting and receiving data by designing and utilizing standardized queries and reports
- Create PDMP users focus groups
- Create an inter-state working group to facilitate the efficient identification of drugs being diverted and abused
- Analyze database regularly to identify suspected cases of abuse and diversion
Evaluate
- Collect data on the number of schedule II-V prescriptions
- Monitor use of the PDMP for investigations
- Collect data on prescription drug-related deaths
- Collect prescription drug-related arrest data
- Collect data on prescribers and dispensers sanctioned for improperly dispensing schedule II -V drugs
- Collect data to assess the degree to which the PDMP is implemented according to plans
- Document other events/factors that could be responsible for any observed changes that might be attributed to the implementation of the PDMP
