Examples of Comparative Change Designs

Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, prepared by the Chicago Community Policing Evaluation Consortium, Community Policing in Chicago, Year Two, 1995. (Illinois)
This study captured community attitudes toward crime problems and police response by surveys before and after the implementation of community policing programs. Changes in the attitudes in five communities in which community policing was implemented were compared to changes found in matched comparison communities.

Blueprints for Violence Prevention, Book One: The Midwestern Prevention Project, 1997. (Colorado)
In this evaluation design, schools and communities were assigned to treatment groups or non-treatment comparison groups based on scheduling flexibility and demographic matching. Students were sampled from each school. Self-report questionnaires were used to track cigarette, alcohol, and drug use at baseline and periodically for three years following program implementation. Changes in use of such substances over time were compared for the treatment and control groups.
